Nick Lucas Gibson Special Prototype All-Rosewood
Nick Lucas Gibson Special Prototype All-Rosewood Guitar Circa 1929. Lucas was born Dominic Antonio Nicholas Lucanese in Newark, New Jersey, on August 22, 1897. He was known in vaudeville as "The Singing Troubadour," and was listed as "The Crooning Troubadour" on many of the numerous 78s that he recorded, beginning in the 1910s. His best-known song was "Tiptoe Through the Tulips". In addition to his talent as a vocalist, he was also a fabulous musician and composer. He played the banjo and mandolin, and was one of the first performers to popularize the acoustic guitar. He wrote and recorded the very first solo-guitar records: "Pickin' the Guitar" and "Teasin' the Frets", which were released in 1922. He published numerous books on the Nick Lucas Guitar Method which were hugely successful. When, in the late 1920s, Gibson began making its first serious attempt at a high quality flat top guitar, it was natural that they enlist the help of Lucas. The resulting guitar, the Nick Lucas Special, went through numerous changes in shape and design between 1928 and 1934. Most of these guitars are very rare but this instrument is completely unique with a Brazilian rosewood top as well as Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It is signed on the back "To my friend Nick Morro from your friend Nick Lucas." The body shape is that of early Gibson flat tops, 13 5/8" wide, and the body is extra-deep, a feature which gives the Lucases such a rich tone. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the collector of fine old Gibson guitars.
