Nicholas Samuel Firfires was born in Santa Barbara California and exhibited an interest and talent for drawing at an early age. He loved to draw animals, especially horses, and tuned his talents while working on ranches throughout Santa Barbara County. He later received some formal training in Los Angeles at the Art Center and Otis Art Institute.

He joined the Army in 1941 and while serving in WWII, began to concentrate more on illustrations and portraits. He moved on to become a successful illustrator of Western magazines and became a member of the Rancheros Vistadores along with Ed Borein and Joe DeYong. Not until 1957 did he settle into watercolor and oil easel painting and was later made a member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CA).

Firfires truly lived the life of a Cowboy and vividly and accurately portrayed that life in his work. He won a number of awards in his lifetime, and his work is collected throughout the United States.
