The last Czar of Russia (born 1868) who reigned from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. In the wake of the Russian Revolution, Nicholas, Empress Alexandra, and their children were imprisoned and finally executed on July 17, 1918. Though the ultimate fate of the Romanovs—and the putative survival of Princess Anastasia in particular—became the stuff of legend, recent research has confirmed that the executions were indeed carried out, and that the remains were soaked in acid and burned. Partly-printed DS, in Russian, one page, 8.75 x 14, March 8, 1914. The Czar presents the award of the Imperial Order of Saint Vladimir, of the third degree, to the former assistant head of the Petersburg pipe factory, retired Major-General Pavel Sultan-Shah. Nicely signed at the bottom in black ink by Nicholas. In fine condition, with margin dings to left edge, and a small pencil notation and crease to top edge.
