Rare original 4 x 6.5 cabinet half-length portrait of Nicholas in uniform, signed at the bottom in black ink, “Nicolaus, 1889.” Published by Levitsky of Saint Petersburg. In fine condition, with scattered surface dings, some light unobtrusive staining, and slight irregular adhesion to the signature.

Joining the army at age 19, Nicholas II spent three years in the service before taking a 10-month tour of Europe and Asia with his brother, Grand Duke George, and their cousin, Prince George of Greece. Although he was next in line to ascend the throne, he attended few political meetings except for those held by the state council and committee of ministers, assuming that it would be several years before any serious responsibilities would fall to him. Enjoying the opportunities that his high position afforded him rather than preparing to rule an empire, Nicholas faced an enormous challenge when he ascended the throne in 1894, following his father’s early death. This photo, signed five years before his reign began, is the earliest we have ever offered, and only the second we have seen signed with his phenomenally rare “Nicolaus” spelling.
