Popov
Porcelain Founded in the
early 19th century, the Popov Factory
became one of Russia's most prominent
porcelain enterprises. From 1813-14, the firm
employed 283 workers and had six kilns
producing mostly table services with
Italianate scenes. Neoclassical and empire
designs then emerged with more landscapes
and hunting motifs, often accented with fine
gilding. By the 1850s, it
became famous for establishing one of the
first color laboratories in Russia,
characterized by vivid blues and unusual
greens in the English taste. Popov porcelain
was renowned for its high artistic quality and
fine white kaolin (porcelain making clay) as
seen in this example. The factory
closed in 1875.
