Letter in black ink reads: ''Never having connected myself with the Order of Masons I do not happen to know of any incidents of the kind you ask to inform you of. I have no doubt but there were many of a very interesting character, and probably surgeons about hospitals would be acquainted with more of them than any other class of volunteers.'' Signed clearly, ''U.S. Grant''. Letter measures 4.5'' x 2.5'' and is framed with an illustration of Grant, copyright, 1898, by A. W. Elson & Co. Boston, to an overall size of 9.25'' x 14''. Near fine condition.
