1890, 1893 - Lot of 3: all from Niagara Mining and Smelting Company. 1-2) identical certificates No. 41 to E.H. Stoke for 200 shares, and no. 257 issued for 10,000 shares to G.E. Palen. Incorporated in 1888 under the laws of Utah. Both datelined Salt Lake City, Utah, 1890, and are signed by G.S. Palen, vice-president, and Howard J. Schermerhorn, asst. secretary. Vignette of Niagara Falls at center top, with smaller images of miners working underground at bottom right and left. Ornate green border with black print and silver embossed corporate seal at bottom left. Cert. No. 41 has "Preferred Stock" written as underprint. No. 41 U/C, while no. 257 cancelled by stamp on stub still attached to certificate. Printer: Wm. H. Haskins Co. 927 Arch. St. Phil. Measures 13" x 9". The company owned the Niagara group of 15 claims and produced silver, gold, and lead. They had a 5-stamp mill in 1898. By 1905, the property was controlled by United States Mining Co. through ownership of a majority of the stock [Ref: Poole, 1898, pp. 752; Mines Hdbk, 1905, pp. 609]. Foldlines, with some yellowing noted along left edge of each. 3) A Six Per Cent Loan Bond, Certificate No. 237, dated 1893. Signed by G.S. Palen, president and Howard J. Schermerhorn, secretary. Underground mining scene at center top. Green border and print with gilt embossed seal at bottom left. This seal indicates the company was incorporated in 1889, in contrast to the above certificates which specifically list the incorporation date as October, 1888. Ten coupons attached, cancelled by stamp on reverse and hole punch through bond and all but two coupons. Printer: ABN. Measures 9" x 14". Folds, extremely fine. - Fenske Collection -61346
