The photo shows a man mounted on a horse and holding a rifle across his lap. They stand in snow in front of a crude log cabin. To the right of the photo a scaffolding has been erected stretching outward from the roof of the cabin and 3 deer carcasses hang from this scaffolding. The photo is somewhat faded; the contrast and focus are only medium. Mounted on a light tan matte that carries a good deal of printed information. To wit: Geo. (Signed) Underwood & Underwood, New York. Photographer George Barker was well known in New York and the Niagara area, having arrived there in 1863 after leaving his hometown of London, Ontario, Canada in the late 1850s. In Niagara he opened his own studio and became known for his photos of the area, probably being the first to issue stereoviews of Niagara Falls. In his 30+ year career he produced over 600 views on paper and glass that included several landscape series, genre scenes and comic photographs. He also published photos of various notable events of the time, such as the Louisville Cyclone and the Columbian Exposition, among others. His photographs are housed in various museums, including the Smithsonian Institution. [Ref: www.georgeglazer.com/archives/maps/.../barkerfort.html]. 3.5 x 7.”
