‘Money can buy it!’ says the figure in the collage by the Vietnamese artist Nguyen Cong Cu, depicting politically charged newspaper cuttings, advertisements and colouring in paint. The letter t in the sentence ‘Money can’t buy it!’ is erased with Tippex. Above this sentence an image of a 100 dollar note with a happy family in the centre is shown. The work is part of the series ‘Vision’, a series of self-portraits by the artist.



The works by the Vietnamese artist are provocative and casual at the same time. Influences of Jean-Michel Basquiat are well visible, to which Cong Cu adds the surreal expressionist elements of his own formal language.



The collage ‘Money can buy it!’ by Nguyen Cong Cu is signed and dated the lower right ‘CU 05’. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of storage. The dimensions of the sheet are 54.7 x 55.1 cm.



Nguyen Cong Cu (born 1969)

Nguyen Cong Cu studied at the Hanoi Industrial Fine-Art College. Today he lives and works in Hanoi. In addition to a number of group exhibitions, his works were also shown solo at the Art Asia Miami 2012.
