While this mask is exemplary of the type commonly given to the Ngbaka, the traditions of the Ngbaka have revealed that almost the entire initiation complex in which the masks appear was acquired from the Mbanja. Does this mean that the masks were made by Mbanja sculptors? The Ngbaka did use masks within the context of male initiation and circumcision rituals, called gaza. Just which forms of masks played the three initiation context roles mentioned in the literature is not known.

Provenance: Gary Hendershott, Little Rock

Shipping: Large Collectibles (view shipping information)
