The lot features an exceptional 19th Century western style American Indian pipe tomahawk from the Nez Perce of Idaho. The piece shows a large, heavy example as seen and noted in Indian Wars period photographs showing a hand-forged pipe axe head. The blade shows a wonderful artful pewter silver inlay at the center which is surrounded by three pieced holes which are also filled with pewter silver. The inlayed area has a wonderful and very unique design, similar to a batwing cutout but completely unique in its form and style. The haft, which is a hardwood example, has extensive hot file brandings along the entire surface and is adorned with various brass trade tacks. The tacks have a varying degree of tarnish and the entire tomahawk shows a fine mellow patina from much honest age and use, which is truly a sign of its late 19th Century age. Overall the piece measures 22 inches in length with the head being 12 inches long and 4 ¼ inches across the blade area.
