Nez Perce Bugle Wampum Beaded Hide Dress 1950's
The lot features a beautiful hide dress with bugle glass trade beads from the Nez Perce of the Plateau Native American Indians and dating to circa 1950's. The dress is comprised of tanned hide leather with a nice yellow coloring having a wonderful integral cape of number three wampum beads, all early original Czechoslovakian glass trade bugle tube beads in a fantastic geometric pattern on both sides. The beads show a unique geometric pattern with a Elk Dreamer Society like head at the center, showing a diamond center with triangular antler or ear like piece radiating from each top corner having a diamond and bar pattern above. The same diamond with triangular pattern is on both sides followed by a wonderful banded design in typical early 1900 Plateau pattern. The beads are over a purple trade clothe loining and show colors of semi-transparent, red, semi-transparent yellowing, semi-transparent dark red, semi-transparent light blue. On each side just below the beaded cap is a row of beadd fringe covered in early trade beads including wound glass greasy padre blue, chalk opaque white, red, what appears to be a hairpipe cylindrical bead and rolled tin jingle dangle cones. The dress is thread sewn and the tanned leather dates the dress to the mid-century. Overall a nice piece with slight bead loss but amazing display and color. Measures 35.5"H by 57"W from the outside fringes.
