This is a brass pipe tomahawk from the Nez Perce Native American Indian people. The piece was collected from Nez Perce Indian Bessie Cawapoo daughter of Sustine (born 1874) & Luke Cawapoo (born 1888) of Umatilla County Oregon. The piece was a gift to Luke Cawapoo’s father from his grandfather and later was passed down from Luke to his children David, Liza, and Bessie Cawapoo. The piece is from circa 1860-1870. This shows a scarcely seen solid brass pipe tomahawk head. The brass head was highly desired due to its unique color, even though it did not hold its edge like the similar iron heads. The piece shows brass iron tacks across the entire carved wood stem with blacksmith file burns accenting the piece. Head has a unique spontoon spear head style European influence design. Rare important Indian artifact. Measures 22”L with a 11.5”x4.25” head that has a 3/4” pipe bowl. Attached to the lot is an image of Luke Cawapoo circa 1900 (original not included).
