Newtown,AZ - Gila County - c1907 - Roosevelt Dam Construction Photograph *Territorial* :
Dam workers stand on the cliffs of a narrow gorge. Photograph measures 6 3/4”x4 3/4”, green single matte 9”x7”, high contrast—tends to the grays, and the focus is sharp. No photographer identified. Newtown was located near the Salt River and serviced workers during the construction of the Roosevelt Dam, 1905-11. Given the scale of the project, this photo was probably taken at the beginning of construction. Newtown can be seen the background of the photo. The town is now buried under the Roosevelt Reservoir. This dam was the first major structure built by the Bureau of Reclamation on the Salt River Project. The dam is located 30 miles northwest of Globe. It was completed in 1911. Originally built as a cyclopean, rubble masonry, thick arch structure, it was 280 feet high and 723 feet long at the crest. The dam has since been modified.
