Lot of 2 from the city Herb Caen dubbed, "Bagdad by the Bay." 1) F.J. BAYER 400 HAIGHT ST SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. Half pint coffin flask, beautiful sun washed violet. Frank J. Bayer began in the saloon business in 1890 when opened a bar on the northwest corner of Haight and Webster. Shortly after the business was opened, he had a coffin flask made to advertise his location. He remained there for 28 years and, even though he survived the 1906 Earthquake, he was forced to close with the beginning of Prohibition [Ref: Picnics, Coffins, Shoo-Flies, John L. Thomas, 1974]. This sample has a single collar, neatly applied top, air vents on the shoulders, and what appears to be a hairline crack or scratch on the right side near the bottom. 2) A rare one pint Newman Flask in near mint condition. Has the usual characteristics associated with this type of bottle, including the metal cup stopper. Bright blue/green tint. Metal token-like insert reads, "TREICH & LOUSTAUNOU 1543 EDDY ST. S.F." Newman flasks were invented by Carleton Newman of San Francisco and patented 17 October 1876, number 183-322. - Feisel Collection -59207
