Phelps, Richard H. NEWGATE OF CONNECTICUT; ITS ORIGIN AND EARLY HISTORY. BEING A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE FAMOUS AND WONDERFUL SIMSBURY MINES AND CAVERNS, AND THE PRISON BUILT OVER THEM... Hartford, 1901. Small 8vo, original maroon cloth, gilt, paneled and decorated in blind. Frontispiece, title, preface leaf, contents leaf, 13-117, (5) pages; 3 additional plates; text illustration of both sides of a Granby copper "now in the Connecticut Historical Society, at Hartford, from which the above cuts have been engraved for this work." Early ownership signatures. Fine. Perhaps the final edition of this interesting work, the original of which provided the basis for much of the information on the Higley (Granby) coppers given in Crosby’s Early Coins of America. The copper for the coins was supplied from the nearby Simsbury mines.
