Checkers and chess player (1887–1977) best known for playing blindfolded checkers: of 1387 blindfold checker games, he won 1331, drew 54, and lost just two. ALS signed “N. W. Banks,” two pages, 8.5 x 10.25, Morris-Systems Publishing letterhead, December 2, 1935. Letter to an admirer. In part: “My route to Illinois will bring me thru your city Thursday the 12th. Will be glad to stop off and put on a chess and checker exhibition…If you can arrange for my hotel accommodations or else at some one’s house.” And an ink signature, “Newell W. Banks, Knox, Indiana, Mar. 12, 1932,” on an off-white 4.5 x 2.5 card. In fine condition, with some show-through from mounting remnants to reverse of second page.
