Newark, Peter. THE CRIMSON BOOK OF PIRATES. Jupiter Books Ltd., London. 1978. 4to. 181, (2) pages. Original crimson cloth, gilt, jacket. Maps. Document facsimiles. b&w and color historical print photos throughout. English text. Jacket/Book Fine. This book expounds upon the life and times of a remarkable group of rogues. Flamboyant figures, capable of ferocious cruelty to their victims, they were men like the satanic Edward Teach (Black beard) and the savage Francois L'Olonois, before whom the swashbuckling pirate heroes of romantic legend would have quailed in fear. The author's fascinating survey charts the course of piracy from the earliest times to the present day, from the rum-soaked buccaneers of the Caribbean, to the pirates of the Spanish Main, from the barbary corsairs of the Medi terranean, to the pira junks of the China Seas. A thrilling tale of thunder, of fabulous riches won and lost, it is tempered by accounts of the appalling privations suffered by many early pirates on their long sea voyages. Crews were decimated by scurvy, and the surgeon's knife and the threat of gangrene were as lethal as injuries received in battle. Carefully documented studies of many of the great pirate captains have brought some startling revelations. The infamous Captain Kidd, for example, a much-maligned man, took to piracy only after a mutinous crew forced him to abandon his legitimate privateer edict. The history of the government-sponsored privateers is not neglected, as they were pirates in all but name. Among the greatest of privateer captains was Sir Francis Drake, whose rapacious desire for plunder sustained him throughout an arduous circumnavigation of the globe. Other chapters are devoted to the pirates' natural habitat (their 'haunts and havens'), their brawling, boozing lifestyle, their peculiarly democratic codes of conduct, and that most rare of creatures, the lady buccaneer. Lot weight: 1 lbs 11oz. Subject(s): Pirate History.
