George V Waitangi Proof Set 1935, KM-PS3, mintage of only 364, a lovely set of 6 pieces (KM-1 to 6), carefully graded by NGC as follows: Crown PR65, Halfcrown PR64, Florin PR65, Shilling PR65, Sixpence PR64, Threepence PR65. The 64 and 65 grades are a bit nit-picking because all are essentially identical, obviously from the same original set, toned a light silvery gray with some faint iridescence, untouched surfaces with good reflectivity, and very choice. Comes with a long red plush case, with black leather inset for the coins, with a similar label on the top identifying the set in gilt lettering as "The Rare Coinage of George V Waitangi Set New Zealand" (all in capital letters on the black label). Rare and desirable. (Total: 6 coins plus case)

The Treaty of Waitangi was an agreement between the British Crown and the tribal Maori that established British law in New Zealand, yet guaranteed that the Maori would retain a certain degree of sovereignty over their lands and could continue to celebrate their culture. It is considered one of New Zealand's signature historical documents, signed on February 6, 1840, at the village of Waitangi in the Bay of Islands. Forty-three Northland Chiefs signed the treaty on that day, and during the following eight months more than 500 Maori chiefs signed it as it was taken around the country. Nearly a century later, this set of special proof coins was minted for the centenary celebration. It is one of the historic sets of the modern world, and the Waitangi crown has often been voted one of the world's most popular coins. Waitangi Day is now New Zealand's national holiday celebrated each year on February 6, with picnics and cultural events taking place on the bay where the treaty was signed.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
