New Yorks Newgate Prison, 1797. The fi
New York's Newgate Prison, 1797. The first state prison in New York State, built to meet the vision of the Enlightenment's philosophical goals of the 18th century. Document, 4 pp., listing the items needed, with costs, for the opening of the prison in Nov. 1797. List, from May to Nov., details such hardware as locks, bolts, keys, crowbars, nails, bars for grates on windows, chisel for carpenter, etc. Each page 8 x 13, nicely penned. The prison, located in today's Greenwich Village, opened on schedule, providing new clothes, charging 15 a day for maintenance, and paying prisoners for their labor in the work program. A schedule of education, with religious and moral instruction, was provided. Lack of management knowledge resulted in deficits; poor planning brought overcrowding, and the arrival of forty women caused more problems than the rest of the inmates put together! When Sing Sing prison was completed in 1828, Newgate was abandoned and sold to New York City. About fine.
