New York World''s Fair Comics 1939 CGC FN 6.0
There's a story behind the 15-cent sticker that covers up the original 25-cent price on this copy. This is one of the few comics to ever have its newsstand price lowered -- DC found out the hard way that kids (or rather their parents) just weren't willing to pay a quarter when all other comics cost a dime, despite the fact that two bits bought 96 pages of comics! Now ranked among the 50 most valuable Golden Age books, this comic shot up in value and significance once collectors realized that this, not Adventure #40, was the first appearance of the Sandman. This book also served as the prototype for the later World's Finest Comics series. Also appearing are Superman (never mind his blond hair on the cover), detective Slam Bradley (written and drawn by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, as was the Superman feature) and more. Bob Kane (drawing gag features), Creig Flessel, and Sheldon Moldoff are among the issue's artists. The cover was a team effort between Vincent Sullivan and Fred Guardineer. By the way, Overstreet's notation is enough to make any comic collector hyperventilate: "...everyone (who) sent a quarter through the mail for it received a free copy of Superman #1 or 2 to make up the dime difference." Overstreet 2006 FN 6.0 value = $6,300. CGC census 12/06: 2 in 6.0, 4 higher.

Shipping: Slabbed Comic (view shipping information)
