Blue felt Prussian style dress helmet with cast brass insignia and fittings, brass chain, leather lined chinstrap and yellow horse hair plume. The cast brass helmet plate has the New York state seal with "EXCELSIOR" in a ribbon below the seal and a spread eagle atop it. The shield is backed by the cavalry crossed sabers and the center of the shield is cut with a "C" for "C Troop". The helmet brim is edged in brass and there is a brass reinforcement on the spine. The side buttons and plume socket mounts are decorated with a cast floral design. The helmet appears to be an enlisted pattern and probably dates from the late 1880s and is similar to the Army Model 1881 Dress Helmet but shows more of the Prussian influence.

Condition: Fine. The blue felt helmet body is not faded and helmet body shows minimal wear. The brass insignia and fittings are in excellent condition and have an attractive age patina. The only significant wear is on the leather chinstrap liner; the delicate leather has deteriorated with age and has separated from the inside of the brass chain chinstrap. A nice example of a late 19th century militia cavalry dress helmet.
