Two letters by New York politicians, both to Jack Collins of the Webster Herald Corporation: a TLS signed "Thomas E. Dewey," two pages, The District Attorney letterhead, April 17, 1939, in part: "This country has made great strides in the past hundred years. Problems that seemed almost insurmountable one hundred years ago, differences that led twenty years later to a terrible Civil War, have since in large measure been solved and the Union has marched forward in strength and greatness. When we reflect on the manner in which our country in the intervening years has expanded in resourcefulness and in influence, still maintaining its institutions and the personal liberties of its people, we can view our present great problems with a little less apprehension. Celebration of an event which occurred a hundred years ago gives us the occasion to survey the span of history and to compare our lot with that of our forefathers. The people of America still have the fortitude of their fathers. They still have the courage and the determination to work out their problems for themselves. And they still have the blessings of self-government. Under such conditions, they can look forward to a happier America"; and a TLS signed "Herbert H. Lehman," one page, 8 x 10.5, State of New York Executive Chamber, April 10, 1939, in part: "I have been informed that the Town of Webster next year will celebrate its One Hundredth anniversary, and that in advance of that celebration the Webster Herald will issue a special edition calling attention to the event…My best wishes to you and your employees on the Webster Herald and to the people of your community." In overall very good to fine condition, with scattered soiling and small stains.
