New York Panel Scene Engraved Smith & Wesson Model 1 Second Issue Revolver with Factory Letter
Manufactured in 1866, this Model 1, Second Issue revolver features nicely executed floral scroll and punch dot engraving on the barrel sides, cylinder, frame and heel of the butt and a panel scene of a hunting dog on point on the left rear of the barrel. The top of the barrel rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS." with a wedge of floral scroll engraving at the breech end, bordered with a scalloped design and the serial number is marked on the butt. The barrel and cylinder are blue, hammer and ejector casehardened and the brass frame silver plated. The revolver is fitted with smooth pearl grips. The accompanying factory letter verifies the serial number, 22 RF short caliber, barrel length, blue and silver finish and that it was shipped in a shipment of 500 on December 7, 1866 to J.W. Storrs, New York City, Smith & Wesson's sole agent from 1857 to 1869. The writer of the letter, Roy Jinks, also states that it was his opinion that the revolver was engraved in New York. (Writer believes the work to be that of Louis Nimschke.)

Good. The iron parts have a dark gray patina with minor pitting on the cylinder. The frame retains approximately 25% of the original silver plating with the balance having an aged patina. The grips very good with the exception of some chipping on the right heel, otherwise they have an attractive natural two tone color and a few scattered minor dings and handling marks. The markings and engraving are clear and crisp. The action is fine.
