New York, NY - $50 1902 Red Seal Fr. 664 The Coal & Iron NB Ch. # (E)7203
The Flynn collection only has one $50 Red Seal, but the one it selected to represent this rare type is a true blockbuster. It comes from a scarce New York City bank bearing a neat occupational title that issued large notes only before disappearing in 1926. One would think that, as the banking center of the entire country, $50 Red Seals would be, if not common, then at least available from New York City, but it is a measure of the true rarity of this type and denomination (which has a population of just about 100 pieces from all banks in the country) that only eight $50 Red Seals have been recorded from all New York banks combined, with banks in the City comprising only half of that total spread evenly amongst the four banks represented in that count. Two of those New York City examples have been off the market for so long that no details about their grades or serial numbers are available, and the third, grading Very Fine, has been off the market since its sole auction appearance ten years ago, where it went for $8800, a huge sum for any National at the time. This specimen is an evenly circulated example with great color, signatures, and eye appeal, and is certain to become one of the key items for the collector fortunate enough to acquire it tonight. Fine-Very Fine.
From The Thomas M.
