New York Engraved Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Relief-Carved Ivory Grips

This is an attractive example of a New York engraved and nickel-plated Black Powder Colt Single Action Army revolver that was manufactured in 1888. The revolver has a full nickel-plated finish and is fitted with two-piece bone grips with a relief carved steer head on the right grip. The engraving approximates what Colt later designated "No. 2" or "B" engraving and consists of American style scrollwork on a punch dot background. The engraving was probably executed by one of the New York based engravers on contract for one of the retailers allied with Colt. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-" in one line. The caliber designation "45" is stamped on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the frame. The Colt "Three-Date/Three-Line" patent markings are roll-stamped on the left side of the frame in a panel formed by scroll work. "45 CAL" is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The serial number, "125503" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. All of the visible serial numbers match. The barrel and cylinder are, correctly, not serial numbered. A Colt "D" inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well and "R" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The ejector rod has the later, oval, head and the hammer spur has bordered knurling.

Good. The revolver retains 30% of the period applied nickel-plated finish. There is some scattered flash pitting on the cylinder and front edge of the frame. The trigger guard, back strap and loading gate show moderate finish wear. The engraving is crisp and the barrel and frame markings are clear. The relief-carved grip is in good overall condition with a spliced repair on the left side and hairline cracks on both grip bottoms and on the right side. The steer head shows moderate handling wear. The action is tight and functions well. This is a good example of a scarce and very desirable factory engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver.
