New York Civil War CDV Album
Intact New York Civil War Carte de Visite Album. Given the soaring collectors' market for CDVs of uniformed Civil War soldiers, it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain period photograph albums that have not been gutted and cannibalized for the "good stuff." Here, however, is a splendid collection that has managed to evade detection thus far. Out of a possible capacity for 80 images, the album retains 79 in place. The photographs consist of 14 celebrity engravings, 29 uniformed soldiers, 27 civilian men, 5 women, and 4 novelty images. Very few of the civilian portraits are tintypes rather than CDVs and probably date to the 1870s or 1880s. Preliminary investigations suggest that most of the identifiable "civilian" men will prove to be comrades of those posing in uniform. Many of the military images are signed, inscribed, or otherwise identified. The soldiers represent either various New York regiments or the 8th U.S Veteran Volunteers, which was organized at war's end. It is highly likely that this album is a memento of service in the 8th U.S.V.V. and that those subjects noted as having been New York Volunteers eventually joined the veteran regiment. Of particular interest is the profile portrait of a bearded officer that is inscribed, "F.E. Pierce Col. 8 U.S.V.V.". Pierce (1833-1896) enlisted in Rochester, NY as a captain in the 108th New York Infantry and ended the war as a brevet brigadier general. He saw combat with the Army of the Potomac, suffering wounds at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. That a signed image of Pierce as Colonel of the 8th U.S.V.V. is included certainly suggests that this album centers upon that organization. Most of the other military images here are of either commissioned or non-commissioned officers. It should be noted, too, that the album opens with CDVs of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.
