ALS from Ransom Fish of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, Company G. Written in ink and datelined ''Elmira, NY, 4 April 1864,'' letter reads in full: ''Dear Wife / I thought I would wright and let you know that I am in Elmira yet, but expect to leave any day. I expected to get a Furlow when I enlisted but I could not. they are not giving any now with out it is some one that has been in the Hospital sick and not many of them. I left Twenty five Dollars with J.B. Eelews the Supervisor of Walton for you and sent my clothes Home by him the Rigament that I enlisted in is the Second New York Heavy Artilery you need not wright to me till you hear from me again for perhaps I may be gone. Yours truly, Ranson Fish.'' Ransom fish mustered into service on 30 March 1864 and mustered out on 29 September 1865 at Washington, D.C. The regiment saw action at North Ana, Cold Harbor, Totopotomoy, the Crater, Deep Bottom, Boydton Plank, Ream's Station and Appomattox. Single page letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
