New York City,NY - 1865 - Lincoln's funeral Stereoview :
A wonderful view of the funeral procession, with casket and mounted riders, moving down a New York City street. Taken from a roof looking down on the procession. Hundreds of citizens line the sidewalks and tops of the buildings on either side of the street. American flags fly from nearly every edifice. The verso printing reads: Anthony’s Instantaneous Views. No. 2957. The Funeral of President Lincoln, New-York, April 25th, 1865. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., American and Foreign Stereoscopic Emporium, 501 Broadway, New-York. The matting is dark yellow, with no visible printing on its face. Edward Anthony and his brother H.T. formed their business together and became notable photographers in and around New York City starting in 1858. His great contribution to the photographic art was the development of stop-action photographs. Perhaps the better term would be fast-action since he boasted of being able to complete the process in 1/40th of a second, as opposed to the 30-second photographs that were then usual. This gave rise to the “Instantaneous” in his series titles, and imbued his pictures with a clarity and immediacy heretofore unknown. In this stereoview, the focus is good but the contrast is slightly dark—in the left photo more than the one on the right. 3.5 x 7.”
