The New York Assay Office served a vital function to the Treasury Department, and opened 10 October 1854, the same year as the San Francisco Mint. The original purpose of the office was to receive California gold, foreign bullion, and coin to relieve the pressure of the huge shipments of California gold coming into the US Mint system, and to prepare bullion ready for coinage at Philadelphia and/or other branch mints. The New York Assay Office remained open and functioning until 1982. The round New York Assay Office stamp is dated 1957, and the substantial ingot is 1.75" wide, 3.75" tall, and 1" deep, 45.90 ozs, 999 3/4 fine with R93 stamped on the end. Very nice condition.
