New York April 18, 1786 5s Fine, Damaged. An extremely rare late-date New York issue and one that we have never handled in any grade. The note has considerable problems. It's pinned to a contemporary backing with a Colonial-era straight pin, and the backing has split and been repaired with more modern tape. There are also a few pieces of tape on the face. The note's biggest problem is that the lower left quarter is missing, with only the backing paper present. All that remains of the signatures are the last three letters of "Henry Remsen." The scroll at the top, the denomination and the New York State Coat of Arms are clear and clean. Even with the tape and backing, this would be a five-figure note if the lower-left quarter were present. Examples of this entire issue are missing from most all major Colonial holdings. As it stands, with one quarter of the note gone, there is still some real value here. We suspect that value is about . . .
