New York 24th Infantry Autograph Letter Civil War ID
Letter from Charles E. Persons of the 24th New York Infantry, Company K. Written in ink and datelined ''Sunday Uptons Hill, Virginia / Feb 2 1862,'' letter reads in part: ''...Well two of the winter months have gone and warm weather will soon be here. I shall not be sorry when it comes either, that is, if it will dry up this mud. The sacred soil of old Virginia is very mellow just now and it has been for three or four weeks back and I have got my share of it now on my feet but some got more then their's especially if they fall down which is not an unfrequent occurence. lt is almost impossible to find a dry place. They may talk of making an advance now as much as they want to now but it can not be done and I think that it will be some time before we can but we have got marching orders. They came last week. A week ago to day our regiment went out on picket again. We had a pretty good time this time out. lt was not very cold but the morning that we came in it rained and we had to march five miles in the rain and it froze as fast as it came so by the time we got to camp we were covered with ice. lt was very hard marching...'' Charles Persons mustered into Company K on 27 September 1861 and was transferred to Company E of the 76th New York Infantry on 13 May 1863. He was wounded at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863 and later died of his wounds on 15 July 1863. Before his death, Persons was engaged in battle at Falmouth, Rappahanock Station, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. 3pp. letter measures 5'' x 8''.
