ALS from Chester C. Beecher of the 13th New York Heavy Artillery, Company D. Accompanied by cover. Composed in pencil and datelined Elmira, New York, 23 July 1863, letter reads in part: ''...we did not go to Belvidere as we expected to. We hired Harris Chase to go and carry us to Cuba...in the evening we took the express train for Elmira...we do not expect to stay here more than a week or so. Our Company laks some officers, I will give you the names of those in charge, Capt. Stephens, 1st. Lieut. Wildman, 2nd Lieut. Palmer. We were examined the 22nd. Winfields eyes are feeling some better to day. The surgeon said that he could not give Winfield a certificate of being perfectly sound, but he thought he could help them. Winfield is going to get some medicine...We have received a part of our uniforms. I was out on guard last night...our rations are comfortable. We have meat potatoes and coffe for breakfast, beans bread and butter for dinner and bread and milk for supper. once or twice we had some cold fresh beef...There are 20 barracks in the field that we are in. there are 2 guard houses...'' The 13th New York served as infantry and heavy artillery in Virginia and North Carolina in the defenses of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and as coastguard aboard war vessels along the Atlantic. Beecher mustered into the 13th New York on 4 August 1863. He transfered to Company L of the 6th New York Heavy Artillery on 18 July 1865 and mustered out of service on 24 August 1865 at Washington D.C. Letter measures 4.5'' x 7.5'' and runs 3.5pp. Toning and mild separation at folds, otherwise excellent condition.
