New Mexico/Texas brass or copper water supply canteen, approximately 14” in diameter and 4” wide with screw cap and heavy harness leather carry strap with metal roller buckle. There is a brass 5-point star on one side of the canteen that ismarked “C.H. Nattress/San Marcial/N.M.”; the canteen shows numerous old dings from carry on a pack animal, etc. Accompanied by an un-dated hand printed document by a Wayne Larson that notes in summary, he purchased the canteen from a collector and describes its features; he further states San Marcial is across the Rio Grande from Valverde, N.M. and that in 1862, there was a battle between the Texas Volunteers of the Confederacy and Union troops; he also states “I have checked and havenot found the Nattress surname serving on either side”. He does however indicate he spoke with a Mrs. Ann Nattress of Albuquerque who indicated to him that her husband spoke often of having relatives in San Marcial. He speculates furtherthat the canteen may have been a battlefield pick up at some time. Also in the paperwork is a copy of a prior offering of this piece in a noted dealer’s possession when its asking price was listed at $4,500. Est.: $1,500-$3,000+.
