New Kingdom, XIXth Dynasty, 1292 - 1190 BC. A large limestone 'false' canopic jar depicting the Baboon-headed god Hapy, which protected the lungs. Nicely detailed, very substantial and in perfect condition. H: 25cm / 10e. The 'false' canopic jar came into being when the internal organs started to be placed back in the body cavity. The part of the funerary equipment consisting of the canopic jar set continued to be employed however, although in many cases the jars were placed in four holes which were cut into the floor of the burial chamber instead of being placed in a box. See the plan for the tomb of Ramses IX at Thebes. Canopic jars of any kind are seldomly seen in today's market place and this is a fine example of the artform in its' later stages. $6000
