New Bedford, MA - $2 1875 Fr. 393 The First NB Ch. # 261
A Gorgeous Lazy Deuce with a pedigree of having been part of several of the greatest collections of the twentieth century. William P. Donlon obtained this note in December of 1959 and kept it in his personal holdings until he sold it in his sale of June, 1974 as lot 360, where it realized all of $485. Its pedigree can be traced back even further to the legendary collection of Albert A. Grinnell, whose duplicates, including this note, were sold by B. Max Mehl in 1943, where this note was lot 1188. Tom obtained this piece in the November, 1988 Hickman-Oakes sale, where it was lot 417, selling at that time for $1250. It has now been graded by PMG, who concur with the Hickman-Oakes and Donlon grades of About Uncirculated, with PMG assigning a grade of Choice About Uncirculated 58. For collectors who desire a Lazy Deuce with the appearance of a fully uncirculated example without the five figure plus price tag, this is the note to purchase.
From The Thomas M.
