British politician (1869–1940) who served as prime minister from 1937 to 1940; he became infamous for the 'appeasement' of Hitler by allowing the German annexation of the Sudetenland. TLS signed “N. Chamberlain,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, blindstamped Treasury Chambers letterhead, November 18, 1935. Letter to diplomat Nicholas Murray Butler, the president of Columbia University and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. In part: "I was very interested to learn…that the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has decided to reprint the Report of the Royal Commission on Gold and Silver, 1887–88, with an introduction by an American scholar. It is good of you to offer to co-operate with us in providing for the distribution of the volume in Great Britain. I understand however that not more than one or two people are likely to be required for official use, and that, as regards any general demand, the Endowment's ordinary machinery for distribution in this country should prove quite satisfactory." In fine condition.
