Nevada Silver Co. Silver Ingot, Rawhide, Nevada,
Nevada Silver Co. Silver Ingot, Rawhide, Nevada, 1919-ca. 1920s. The Nevada Silver Company was officially organized in 1919 by a group of Idaho lawyers. Their resident agent was W. H. Leonard in Rawhide, Nevada in Room 1 of the Post Office Building. Leonard was a well-known Nevada mining man, and made a good front man for the Idaho investors. The group sold these silver ingots as part of a silver marketing campaign in western states parallel to others in Reno (Sterling Investment Co. [1930] and Denver (Pedley-Ryan [1930's]).
There were a number of these purchased by an advanced collector in the 1950s in Tonopah, another mining camp in central Nevada, and the closest large town to Rawhide. Rawhide today is completely gone, now replaced by a large open pit gold mine, one of the largest such operations in America. In Nevada, many of the ghost towns had gold and silver ore underneath the building sites, and such was the case for Rawhide.
The Nevada Silver Co. had their charter revoked in 1932. The silver promotion of the 1920s never worked, and companies such as this folded, leaving a few ingots or coins (as in the case of the other companies) as remnants of the period. This is a 4.56 ounce ingot valued at $5.88. Light gray patina overall with some deeper accents of color around the margins and recesses of the devices.
From The Alan Bingel Collection.
