The Nevada Coal Company was the major developer of the coal deposits in the Coaldale district. Coaldale townsite was established in 1884; the district itself is located in southwestern Nevada near the California border. It was situated on the Tonopah & Goldfield Railroad line, which provided connections for shipping to Los Angeles and other areas [Ref: pubs.usgs.gov/bul/0531k/report.pdf]. Wyatt Earp worked in this area at one time after he left Tombstone. Actual deposits were discovered in 1893 by William "Jackass Billy" Groezinger. Mining began in 1894 with coal being shipped to Candelaria, Silver Peak, Fish Lake Valley, and other nearby locations. The old Coaldale station was founded in 1902 and serviced present-day junction of US 6 and US 95 until 1959. Nothing remains of the structure today. - Maish Collection -58993
