Lot of two photographs. Date and photographer unknown. First photograph has sharp focus and low contrast. Photo measures 5’’x 3 ¾’’ on mounted on white matte that measures 6’’x 5 ¾’’. The photo provides a bird’s eye view of a mine and several buildings. Four buildings can be seen in the distance. There is writing in ink on the back on the matte “Mines on Deer Creek, Nevada City.” Little wear, indentation of writing on the back on the photograph can be seen. Edges have small creases from being bent in the past. Second photograph is of a closer look at a mining camp. 6 ½’’x 4 ¼’’, medium contrast and focus is sharp. Scrapes appear mostly in the center and upper right part of the photo. Upper and lower edges are slightly worn, along with the right side. Writing on the back of the photograph written in pencil. Nevada City was the home to several gold mines during the California Gold Rush days. The town’s population boomed from 1,067 in the spring of 1850 to about 6,000 in the fall. Author William B. Clark estimated the total produced by the mines was between 50 and 70 million dollars [Gudd G. Erwin. California Gold Camps. University of California Press. Berkeley. 1975].
