Nevada City,CA - Nevada County - c1880 - Clock Repair Shop Photograph :
A view of a man and a woman at work can be seen through the front windows of a small storefront with a large clock hanging from a pole outside and 24 pocket watches hanging from a display in the far right window. The cabinet card measures 6 1/2 x 4 1/2", and is mounted on beige cardstock measuring 8 1/2 x 6 1/2". Contrast is medium, while focus is sharp. Foxing is present, particularly on the left side of the image, while several areas of the cardstock are stained or discolored. No photographer is noted. "Phelps Clock Repair, Nevada City Calif" is handwritten in pencil on the reverse in what appears to be older writing, while the same information is hand printed in pencil below it in a more modern style. The number "#51-5-12" is also printed on the upper right reverse. While the location noted is difficult to verify, the shop pictured does appear to deal in watches and clocks. While a post office was established in 1850, the town was incorporated in 1856. Originally called Deer Creek Dry Diggings, the name was changed to Nevada in 1850 and to Nevada City ten years later to avoid confusion with the newly formed State of Nevada.
