Netherlands Contract Johnson Model 1941 Semi-Automatic Rifle
The innovative Model 1941 Johnson Automatic Rifle with rotary magazine and detachable barrel was tested against the army's recently adopted M1 Garand rifle prior to WWII. Although never formally adopted by the U.S. Army or Marine Corps, large numbers of 1941 rifles were purchased by the Dutch government for issue to colonial forces in the Dutch East Indies. After Pearl Harbor a number of these contract 1941 rifles were issued to the U.S.M.C. Parachute battalion and saw limited service with the Marines in the South Pacific in 1943. This particular rifle is marked with the large "crown/W" Cipher of Queen Wilhelmina (reign 1890 to 1948) ahead of the top receiver marking. This rifle has the standard Johnson patent markings and nomenclature: "CAL 30-06 SEMI-AUTO / "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" / MODEL OF 1941 / MADE IN PROVIDENCE R.I. U.S.A." on the top of the receiver above the serial number. The front of the barrel collar is marked ".30-'06" above the barrel and "41" below it. The bolt serial number is matching to the gun. The right rear of the receiver is marked with the trademark "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO" in a triangle. The tangent rear sight is correctly graduated in meters from 100 to 1,000 and is marked "M2" on the left side. The metal components have a parkerized finish and the stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut with a steel checkered buttplate. Complete with a contemporary leather military sling.
