Nero Claudius Drusus, d. 9 B.C.
Nero Claudius Drusus, d. 9 B.C.<p> AE sestertius minted posthumously by his son, the emperor Claudius, A.D. 50-54. Bare head left of Nero Claudius Drusus/Claudius seated left amidst arms. RIC 109 (under Claudius) [as Scarce], BMC 208. Nearly EF with remarkable reverse detail, dark reddish brown patina. These sestertii, worth one-quarter of a silver denarius, were struck from orichalcum, which is very similar in composition to modern brass. When these coins were minted, then, they were of a shiny brass color and must have been goldlike - a treat to behold! Through their centuries in the soil, the AE or copper alloy coinage has developed patination, highly variable in color and evenness. The acidity or alkalinity of the burial spot has a great deal to do with how the coin looks today. For example, the volcanic soil of Sicily can impart a hard green or even blue patina (accent on the first syllable is preferred), which is so magnificent and highly prized. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M.
