Nephew of Nathan Hale. Group of 30 issues of Boston Weekly Messenger, published and edited by Nathan Hale, nephew of the patriot. 1815 (four), 1816 (ten), 1817 (five), and 1818 (eleven). Begun in 1814, this paper continued until 1854, and was the first to carry an editorial as a newspaper feature. About 14 pp. each, issues include local, national, and international news, as well as features on stocks, bank bills of exchange, weather, stage (travel) notes, and more. Issues filled with articles signed in type by James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, De Witt Clinton, Henry Clay, Albert Gallatin, John Calhoun, et al. News of Indian Wars, Du Pont powder explosion, a "sea serpent," Gen. Jackson's attack on New Orleans. Small in appearance, but a most comprehensive paper in content. Some edge wear, toning, occasional staining, none of these detracting from legibility. Subscriber's name in blank margin.
