Neolitic period, Hong Shan culture green jade carving in shape of a coiled dragon. The Hong Shan nephrite jade carvings are very rare and most of the authentic Hong Shan carvings are made from hardstone bowenite, rather than nephrite. This type of dragon is called zhu-long, or pig-dragon, due to its appearance. The coiled dragon is in an incomplete round disk with a slit between the head and the tail. Auctions in China of Hong Shan nephrite jade carvings reached phenomenal prices due to its rarity. The perforations are typical bi-conical, drilled from both sides, attesting to its authenticity. Size: 1.5" X 1.2" (4 X 3 cm.).
Provenance: Dr. Mircea Veleanu's jade collection, the well known author of the illustrated reference book for collectors: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors".
