Archaic Chinese rock crystal carving dating to Hong Shan Neolithic culture. While the Neolithic jade carvings are relatively abundant on the collectors' market, the rock crystal carvings are extremely rare and not found even at world major museums. This is an authentic Neolithic carving similar in carving to the jade statues of Hong Shan culture in Northern China. It represents a mythological animal with human head and in shape of a quadruped animal. As there are no records of the customs of this period, we assume that this large statue was used as a veneration idol. The animal represented shows signs of starvation as proeminent ribs and spine. Apparently, in the neolithic period, the fasting was considered as a way of elevation of the spiritual status above the earthly body functions. At first sight, this statue appears as is carved in yellow jade. A close scrutiny, reveals that despite opaque appearance, the carving was done in transparent rock crystal that with the age became semi-opaque, similar to crystalized honey. Also, the hardness is much less even than the fossilized jade. Superficial micro-erosion is seen only with a magnifying glass. Size: 6.2" X 4" (16 cm. X 10 cm.). Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's collection, the author of the collectors' textbook: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors" and the owner of Objets d'Art Uniques Internet store. Estimated value: $10.000.
