Neolithic Native American Celts c. 10000 – 4500 BC
Featured in this lot are these Native American celts from the Neolithic period, circa 10,000-4,500 BC. There are three celts in this collection. The celts show smooth finish consistent with the period’s tool preference. Celts are a Native American tool made of a long thin stone attached to a wood handle. They were most likely used similar to an axe or a hoe. Celt, a characteristic New Stone Age tool, is a polished stone ax or adz head designed for attachment to a wooden shaft. They were probably mainly used for felling trees or shaping wood. The condition of these celts is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of these stone celts range from 6 3/4" x 3 1/2" to 14 3/4" x 3 3/4".
