American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Though the nearly eighty-year-old Miles volunteered to serve during World War I, his offer was declined by Woodrow Wilson. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, imprinted Chicago World’s Fair letterhead, July 14, circa 1892. Miles writes to Colonel Rice, commander of the Columbian Guard. In part: “I have tried to find you but without success. Should this reach you this time please meet me at Old Vienna and take dinner with me, would be pleased to have you bring…any friends with you.” Small split along bottom of hinge, a few small stains, and show-through from adhesive on the reverse of the last page, otherwise fine condition.
