American soldier (1839–1925) who earned a niche in military history as the only man to serve as an officer in the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. Miles was wounded four times during the Civil War, receiving the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He played a leading role in nearly all of the army's campaigns against the American Indian tribes of the Great Plains. Ink signature, “Nelson A. Miles, Major General, U.S.A.,” on an off-white 3 x 2 slip affixed to a slightly larger slip. Rusty paperclip marks to lower left and a bit of scattered light soiling, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by an original unsigned 4 x 6.25 cabinet photo of Miles by Bogardus of New York. Portrait has some bends and spots, as well as light silvering.
