Neil Armstrong Space First Day Cover Signed “Neil Armstrong,” 6.5” x 3.5”. A block of four 5¢ stamps, two pairs of the 5¢ se-tenant Gemini 4 “Walk-in-Space” commemoratives, has been affixed, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Florida, September 29, 1967, First Day of Issue. Gemini 4 Astronaut Edward H. White II had made the first U. S. space walk in 1965; he was one of three astronauts who were killed in the Apollo 1 fire on January 27, 1967. The envelope bears the name and Seabrook, Texas address of “D. O. Coons, M.D.” indicating the first day cover (unsigned) was mailed from the Kennedy Space Center to Dr. Coons in the Houston suburb of Seabrook. Dr. D. Owen Coons was NASA's flight doctor. His suggestion that an umbilical line that could be plugged into the spacecraft and plugged into Ed White's suit must be built and combined with an emergency source of oxygen made White's spacewalk possible. Both White and Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon, were in the second group of astronauts selected in 1962. This signed envelope is from Dr. Coons' collection.

Shipping: Flatware (view shipping information)
